My application version does not match the version in my browsers
Once upon a time, the 1Password application included everything: a nice graphical application for doing what you needed with your saved data, and a set of browser “extensions”. In those times, all the version numbers always matched.
Starting with our efforts to integrate with Google Chrome and now with Safari 5.1, the 1Password application comes included with a starting extension for these browsers for customers to get started with. Once they are installed from the application, these extensions are updated within the browser – not when 1Password application updates are made. The 1Password application updates no longer need to try and update its browser extensions, and that means you can easily have version number differences that may seem significant, but are perfectly expected. If we need to update the main application for something, but there are no associated changes needed in the browsers we do not update the browser extension versions – only that of the application. Likewise, if an improvement only involves one or more browser extension we can update the browser without releasing a new version of the application.
So what does all this mean, really? Here’s an example of what you might see for version numbers:
- 1Password for Mac 3.7.2
- Google Chrome 1Password extension 3.6.3.30953
- Safari 5.1 1Password extension 3.7.b10
- Firefox 5 1Password extension 3.7.2
The browser extension for Firefox is currently still included in, and updated from the 1Password application, although that is anticipated to change too.
For manually updating of the 1Password extension for Safari 5.1, please follow these directions. For Google Chrome, follow these directions.
Please note that currently the separate browser extensions are not listed in any Internet listing sites, so the only way to initially obtain them is from within the 1Password for Mac application.
