Which Firefox versions are supported on Mac?
For the best security and online experience we recommend that you run the latest version of Firefox that your Mac supports. Listed below are the versions of Firefox that 1Password and its browser extension supports, organized by OS X compatibility.
Firefox (latest version)
Snow Leopard (10.6) and Lion (10.7)
The 1Password browser extension is compatible with the latest version of Firefox on Snow Leopard and Lion. You can grab our extension for the latest version of Firefox from our browser extension download page.
Leopard (10.5)
The latest version of Firefox is not supported on Leopard. Please consider upgrading to Snow Leopard or Lion if possible or install Firefox 3 if you are unable to upgrade.
Firefox 4 through the previous version
At this time, Mozilla is only issuing security updates for the latest version of Firefox and the older version 3. All other versions have unpatched security vulnerabilities. Additionally, it is not known how long Mozilla will be maintaining the older Firefox 3 browser. As a 1Password user, we know that you take security seriously, so we thought it was wise to let you know this.
In light of the above, it is obviously a good idea to upgrade to the latest Firefox version if at all possible. However, if you still decide to use an older version of Firefox for some reason, version 3 is the one we suggest.
Firefox 3
Snow Leopard (10.6) and Lion (10.7)
Please see our Other Versions of 1Password page for information about support for Firefox 3 in Snow Leopard and Lion.
Leopard (10.5)
The 1Password for Leopard provides built-in support for Firefox 3. Download 1Password 3.5 from our Other Versions of 1Password page.
Troubleshooting the Older Firefox 3 Extension
If you have any troubles getting the 1Password browser extension to appear in Firefox 3, please see the Troubleshooting section below.
Ensure our Firefox extension is installed
If you are using 1Password 3.8 or newer, you should install the latest 1Password extension in the current version of Firefox.
Please see our Other Versions of 1Password page for information on using Firefox 3 with 1Password 3.8 or newer.
If you are using 1Password 3.5 and you don’t see 1Password available under Firefox’s Tools > Add-ons window, please quit Firefox. Open 1Password, and go to 1Password > Preferences > Browsers to ensure that the ‘Firefox’ option is checked as shown here:
If it is already checked, uncheck and then recheck the box. Now start Firefox, and the 1Password extension should appear in Firefox’s toolbar.
1Password still won’t appear in Firefox
Firefox can have sort of a sticky memory when upgrading it from one version to another, which can prevent the 1Password extension from loading or performing properly. You can fix this by completely uninstalling the Firefox extension and reinstalling it:
- Make sure Firefox is not running.
- Launch 1Password from your /Applications folder
- Click 1Password > Preferences > Browsers
- Uncheck the box next to all versions of Firefox
- Launch Firefox and click Tools > Add-ons > Extensions. Make sure that 1Password is not listed.
- Step #5 is the most important step so we’re repeating it again here :) Launch Firefox and make sure 1Password is not there.
- If 1Password is appearing in the Extensions window, click the Uninstall button on the 1Password extension and quit Firefox.
- Return to your 1Password window and check the box next to Firefox. If there are two versions, pick the one that you have installed and deselect the other one.
- Restart Firefox and click Tools > Add-ons > Extensions. Make sure that 1Password is listed.
After following these steps, the Firefox extension will have forgotten everything about previous versions and should work correctly.
Install 1Password in your Mac’s main /Applications folder
Sometimes the install location of 1Password and Firefox can cause issues, especially when the path includes spaces and other “special” characters. Make sure the 1Password and Firefox applications are stored in your Mac’s main /Applications folder and then repeat the reinstall steps above.
Firefox Compatibility Mode
If you disabled Firefox’s Compatibility Mode feature you may run into issues, most notably that Firefox will attempt to load any 1Password extension you install. If the extension you installed is not designed for the particular version of Firefox that you are using, this will cause problems.
To reenable this option, follow these steps:
- Visit the URL “about:config”
- Search for extensions.checkCompatibility
- Ensure the value is true
- Restart Firefox
Once compatibility mode is enabled, restarting Firefox should allow the 1Password browser extension to appear in the toolbar.
Test using a fresh profile
In rare cases, your Firefox Profile may be conflicting with 1Password. Most often, this is a result of migrating a profile from earlier versions of Firefox or from a Windows/Linux machine.
You can test if this is the cause in your case by creating a New Firefox Profile.
